Pomerol 2020

Blue clay and gravel over iron-rich crasse de fer hold water and warmth, giving Merlot its velvet: ripe plum, truffle and a long mineral line, seductive young yet patient.

Médoc 2018

Gravel over clay-limestone drains fast and forces the vine to dig, concentrating the fruit into structure, graphite and blackcurrant built for decades.

How the wine is chosen

Science, not heritage

Since 1855, Bordeaux’s Premier Cru hierarchy has been defined by the château. SGC challenges that model with science: we rank the land, not the château. Every parcel is mapped in the laboratory across four pillars, then scored on a 20-point index.

No labels. Just the wine.

Earlier SGC releases, from the same parcels and the same method, put to the hardest test in wine: served blind beside the greatest names in Bordeaux.

Goldman Sachs interviews
Arnaud Christiaens

Arnaud Christiaens in conversation with Goldman Sachs

Why I founded SGC

My father loved wine. He gave me a taste for it very young, though neither he nor anyone in my family worked in the trade. Years later I went to Bordeaux to build my own cellar, with no intention of starting a wine company. Two things stayed with me.

The first was the classification of 1855. Bordeaux has made thousands of wines since, yet the names at the summit have barely changed. The second was the soil. Everyone spoke beautifully about terroir, but I wanted to know what lay behind the word. Why could exceptional ground exist in one part of a vineyard while a few metres away the quality was entirely different?

That question became SGC. We analyse the land itself, parcel by parcel, layer by layer, and place every soil on the same twenty-point scale. We do not assume a château or an appellation is equal throughout. The land is a patchwork, and we select only its exceptional parts. The vintage will always matter, but great soil gives the vine its foundation.

This is why I often say: Do not rank the label. Rank the soil.

Science tells us where a great wine may begin. It does not decide where the journey ends, and that belongs to the glass, so we serve our wines blind, beside the great names of Bordeaux, with no reputation to influence the result. Once the label disappears, the wine must speak for itself.

FAQs

Yes. The pair is the introduction, not the commitment. If you find you prefer the Médoc, you can move your allocation onto the Médoc alone, or onto the Pomerol alone, and keep the same member rate.

Tell us before your next case is prepared and we will change it. You can switch back, or return to the mixed allocation, whenever you like.

The first SGC cuvée released to the public: a Pomerol 2020 and a Médoc 2018. Both were chosen by soil analysis rather than by appellation or château name.

You reserve a set number of bottles each year at the member rate of £105 a bottle, 40% below the release price. That rate is locked for as long as you hold your allocation.

Yes. You can decrease or cancel in any year, free of charge, before your renewal.

On the Discovery trial you can cancel free at any point before your first case ships.

Every parcel is rated from 0 to 20 on soil composition, drainage and depth. Only parcels scoring 15 or above, roughly the top 9%, are ever bottled.

If you begin with the Discovery trial, your trial bottles are sent now and your first case follows three months later. After that your allocation arrives once a year.
